In a significant leadership transition within the Indian Army’s operational structure, Lieutenant General Harjeet Singh Sahi officially assumed the appointment of Chief of Staff, Headquarters Western Command, at Chandimandir Military Station on 26 May 2026. Lieutenant General Harjeet Singh Sahi’s military career reflects nearly four decades of operational service across some of India’s toughest and most demanding theatres. Commissioned into the 23rd Battalion of The Rajput Regiment in December 1988 after graduating from the prestigious Indian Military Academy, Dehradun, Lt Gen Sahi belongs to a generation of officers who have witnessed and participated in some of the most defining phases of India’s modern military history. Presently serving as Colonel of The Rajput Regiment, he carries forward the legacy and traditions of one of the Indian Army’s oldest and most battle-hardened infantry regiments.

Apart from his operational achievements, he also holds two MPhil degrees along with a Master’s Degree in Defence and Strategic Studies. Soon after assuming charge as Chief of Staff, Western Command, Lt Gen Sahi laid a wreath at the Veer Smriti War Memorial and paid homage to soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in service of the nation. The gesture symbolised continuity of military traditions and reaffirmed the Army’s institutional commitment toward honouring its fallen warriors.
In his remarks after assuming the appointment, the General Officer reiterated his commitment toward strengthening operational preparedness, enhancing capability development, and ensuring the welfare of serving personnel, veterans, and their families. His statement comes at a time when the Indian Army continues to focus on force modernisation, indigenous defence technologies, integrated operational doctrines, and enhanced troop welfare measures under rapidly changing strategic circumstances.

इसके अलावा उन्होंने जम्मू-कश्मीर में नियंत्रण रेखा यानी एलओसी पर अपनी बटालियन और बाद में एक इन्फैंट्री ब्रिगेड की कमान संभाली। यह वह क्षेत्र है जहां लगातार घुसपैठ की कोशिशें, सीमा पार फायरिंग, आतंकी गतिविधियां और सैन्य तनाव बना रहता है। ऐसे क्षेत्रों में नेतृत्व करना केवल सैन्य कौशल नहीं बल्कि अत्यंत तेज रणनीतिक निर्णय क्षमता, खुफिया समन्वय, स्थानीय परिस्थितियों की समझ और सैनिक मनोबल बनाए रखने की क्षमता भी मांगता है।
उनकी सेवाएं काउंटर इंसर्जेंसी फोर्स ‘किलो’ में भी रही हैं, जहां आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों का संचालन अत्यंत संवेदनशील और जटिल परिस्थितियों में किया जाता है। कश्मीर में लंबे समय तक आतंकवाद विरोधी अभियानों का अनुभव किसी भी अधिकारी को आधुनिक हाइब्रिड वॉरफेयर की गहरी समझ देता है क्योंकि यहां पारंपरिक युद्ध के साथ मनोवैज्ञानिक युद्ध, स्थानीय नेटवर्क, सूचना तंत्र और सीमा पार आतंकवाद सभी समानांतर रूप से सक्रिय रहते हैं।

लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल हरजीत सिंह साही के सैन्य करियर की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण उपलब्धियों में से एक भारतीय सेना की 3 कोर की कमान संभालना भी माना जाता है। 3 कोर भारतीय सेना की सबसे बड़ी और सबसे रणनीतिक कोर में से एक है, जिसकी जिम्मेदारी पूर्वी सीमाओं, भारत-म्यांमार सीमा और पूर्वोत्तर भारत के छह राज्यों तक फैली हुई है। यह क्षेत्र सामरिक दृष्टि से बेहद संवेदनशील माना जाता है क्योंकि यहां सीमा सुरक्षा, विद्रोही गतिविधियां, अवैध घुसपैठ, हथियार तस्करी, ड्रग नेटवर्क, जातीय संघर्ष और अंतरराष्ट्रीय सीमा प्रबंधन जैसी कई जटिल चुनौतियां मौजूद रहती हैं।

पश्चिमी कमान में नई जिम्मेदारी संभालने से पहले लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल साही आर्मी वॉर कॉलेज, महू के कमांडेंट के रूप में कार्यरत थे। आर्मी वॉर कॉलेज भारतीय सेना का प्रमुख सैन्य शिक्षण संस्थान माना जाता है जहां वरिष्ठ अधिकारियों को आधुनिक युद्ध, रणनीतिक योजना, सैन्य नेतृत्व और भविष्य की युद्ध अवधारणाओं से संबंधित प्रशिक्षण दिया जाता है।
उनके नेतृत्व में संस्थान ने कई महत्वपूर्ण पहल शुरू कीं जिनका उद्देश्य भारतीय सेना की पेशेवर सैन्य शिक्षा को बदलते युद्ध परिवेश के अनुरूप बनाना था। आधुनिक युद्ध अब केवल बंदूक और टैंक तक सीमित नहीं रह गया है। ड्रोन युद्ध, आर्टिफिशियल इंटेलिजेंस, साइबर युद्ध, स्पेस आधारित निगरानी, सूचना युद्ध और नेटवर्क आधारित ऑपरेशन भविष्य की लड़ाइयों का महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बन चुके हैं। ऐसे में सैन्य शिक्षा संस्थानों की भूमिका और भी बढ़ जाती है।
लेफ्टिनेंट जनरल साही के कार्यकाल में आर्मी वॉर कॉलेज को 15 जनवरी 2026 को प्रतिष्ठित “चीफ ऑफ द आर्मी स्टाफ यूनिट अप्रिसिएशन” से सम्मानित किया गया, जिसे उनकी नेतृत्व क्षमता और संस्थागत सुधारों की बड़ी उपलब्धि माना जा रहा है। रक्षा विश्लेषकों का मानना है कि उन्होंने सैन्य शिक्षा को केवल पारंपरिक ढांचे तक सीमित नहीं रखा बल्कि भविष्य के युद्धक्षेत्र की जरूरतों के अनुरूप नई सोच विकसित करने का प्रयास किया।
